My mum, Vera Grace Huntley was born in 1903 in Cardiff, the daughter of Herbert Walter Huntley and Florence Jane Huntley (nee Roch) (see preceding photo). On leaving school she trained as a hairdresser in Cardiff. She lived in Loudon Square, Cardiff and attended the Sunday School there where my father, Robert Wesley Sanders, was Secretary and a teacher. I understand that she used to ask if she could carry his books for him and that was how they started to go out together. They married in 1923 at Charles Street Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Cardiff, where her father was choir master. She loved music ( coming from a musical family some of whom were members of Penarth Operatic Society), particularly opera and operetta; she also enjoyed reading and doing crosswords and my father used to say she read the South Wales Echo every day from the date on the top of the first page to the printers name at the bottom of the last page ! She died in 1994 aged 90.
Below is a selection of photographs of my mum in her early years, before she married my dad.
